Can we appreciate how feminist all these movies are in completely different ways?
Pitch Perfect and Bridesmaids proved that yes, a comedy with an all girl cast is possible, and both guys and girls will fucking love it
Easy A is filled to the brim with slut-shaming and how fucking ridiculous it is
She’s the Man has the traditional type of plot of a tomboy girl succeeding in a male-dominated area (typical does not mean bad)
Mean Girls is all about the cattiness of girls and how that shit has got to stop. (“You’ve got to stop calling each other sluts and whores. It just makes it okay for guys to call you sluts and whores”)
And Legally Blonde is a personal favorite. Beauty does not mean ignorance, femininity does not mean inferiority. You can be kick-ass, intelligent and feminist even when you’re wearing pink. This kinda message seems a little harder to come by when it comes to “empowered women” in the media.

‘A bit of a romantic spin’ is different from it being a Romantic Comedy. In Anchorman, Ron has a relationship with Veronica but we don’t call it a Romantic Comedy. In She’s the Man, while she did end up with a guy, the entire point of the movie was her getting onto the soccer team. That was the goal, that was the point.
This is why I call these non-romantic comedies. There may be relationships involved in all but that’s not the point in any.

To understand the rise of Islamophobia, it is necessary to analyze the current context. We are in a situation of global economic crisis and a the decline of the European identity in the face of emerging countries such as China, India, etc.
The white European identity that dominated the world for 500 years is in decline. The voices – often hysterical – raised in the media against Islam fundamentally express a fear of this decline. Whites are losing their historical centrality, their Triple A rating so to speak, and they see all these non-Whites, wrongly identified with Islam, as a threat to their identity. After dominating for centuries, they are figuring out that, like them, others want to live, assert themselves and transform the order established by racism and colonialism, which necessarily signifies for them a loss of power and the privileges that come with it. Those who rightly fight this order to claim their rights and their full place, who fight discrimination, are thus seen as invaders.
Indigenous resistance is perceived as terrifying, illegitimate and abusive even though what people are asking for in immigrant communities and popular neighbournoods is, above all, equality of treatment and of rights. While such demands do not seem outrageous to me, they clearly do for those who fight to preserve their status and privilege while exerting pressure to keep “the Muslims” in a subaltern position…
